Learn with us
One of the main ways FGPM brings value to our first generation members is by acting as a resource for common questions and experiences. We invite you to explore our library of short articles - written by the FGPM Board of Directors or Milwaukee’s community leaders, links to our partner organizations, and ways to get involved with the FGPM mission.

Data Storytelling 101: Turning Numbers Into Narratives
Data storytelling sits at the intersection of analysis and action, translating numbers into meaning that leaders can understand and act on. In environments where attention is limited and decisions move quickly, those who can tell clear, relevant data stories tend to stand out, regardless of title or tenure. For first-generation professionals, data storytelling can quietly elevate how their work is perceived.
First Gen and Focused: How to Set Intentional Goals for 2026
This year, we approach personal goals with strategy
As first generation professionals, 2026 is the year that our personal goals become part of our overall advancement plan. When we intentionally support our personal wellbeing, our confidence, and our energy, we reduce the burnout that often comes with carrying so much on our shoulders. Personal success is not separate from professional growth. It is the foundation that makes lasting success possible.
The Network You Build, Not Inherit: Redefining Access in the Digital Age
Some people grow up with built-in networks rooted in family ties, elite schools, or long-standing social circles that naturally support professional success. For first-generation professionals, that kind of inherited access is often absent, which requires building relationships from the ground up. While this can feel like a real structural barrier, this blank slate also creates a powerful opportunity. Intentional, value-driven networks built with purpose and integrity often become more meaningful, more resilient, and ultimately more influential than those gained through inheritance alone.
Future-Proofing Your Career: How First-Gens Can Thrive in an AI-Driven Economy
Savvy first gen leaders see the opportunity presented with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI). This evolving landscape allows first generation professionals to leverage the skills that have made them successful in new and meaningful ways. In this Article, we discuss how first generation leaders are uniquely situated to embrace sweeping change, stay adaptable, and provide bespoke value.
Money Mindset Makeover: Breaking Generational Barriers Around Wealth
As first generation teens and students with money-conscious parents, we have often been told that ‘money doesn’t grow on trees,’ meaning ‘don’t waste it on frivolous things.' Now, as first generation professionals, we may be hyper-focused on the value and spread of our dollar. While we should always strive for good financial habits, balancing the good sense of our past with the opportunities available to us in the future helps us cultivate choices for our own orchard (and for the next generations’).
How to Speak Up in Meetings (Even If You’re New)
Speaking up in meetings can be intimidating, especially if you are the youngest person in the room or still new to your role. It can be even more challenging for first generation professionals who may not have had prior exposure to professional environments. In this Article, we help you contribute to your meetings productively and intentionally.

We couldn’t do this without your support
In an effort to make FGPM as accessible to young professionals as possible, we have decided to forego membership dues for both general membership and participation in the Mentorship Program. For this reason, we are seeking public support through donations to continue to further our mission. FGPM is a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization and all donations are tax-deductible.
