Liz Grams knows a thing or two about employee attraction and retention in Milwaukee. Beginning her career at Manpower in talent acquisition, Liz Grams has been at the center of full lifecycle recruiting for over 10 years. Now at Baker Tilly US, a leading international advisory CPA firm, Liz shares her best practices for young professionals to excel in their careers.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. This seems obvious, but really – take the time to figure out what you LOVE to do, and then pursue that. I only figured this out by having informational interview (aka coffee connects) with over ten people in ten very different types of jobs. This is the only way I figured out what truly resonated with me. In addition, no matter what your job is, there will be “off” days or “bad” days. That is why it is called work, and you get paid. But ultimately, if you truly enjoy what you do, it will be more fun than work, the majority of the time.

What is the best advice for your younger self upon first entering the workplace?
I would have shown myself more respect, more love and more grace.
How can young professionals stand out in the workplace?
Come early, dress well, introduce yourself and follow-up afterward via email or LinkedIn.
The follow-up is really the most important part.
Best tips for those new to networking?
Be bright (memorable), be brief (don’t take a lot of this person’s time) and be gone.
Why is mentorship important?
It is essential to your personal and professional growth! Have a few mentors – they can look different, and assist you with different parts of your life and career.

The city is extremely accessible, and affordable.
